Semiconductor supply to be tight until end of 2023

The supply of critical semiconductors is expected to remain tight until the end of next year, the boss of Fiat carmaker Stellantis said today.

Speaking to French newspaper Le Parisien, Carlos Tavaresn said: “The situation will remain very complicated until the end of 2023, then will ease a little.

“Semiconductor manufacturers have an interest in making business with us again, especially as they’re raising prices.”

Semiconductors, or computer chips, are used in most of today’s technology.

Pandemic restrictions paired with a boom in demand for consumer electronics has weighed heavily on the computer chip supply chain over the past couple of years.

Several automotive companies were forced to dial back their production forecasts last year in response to the acute shortage of computer chips.

Shortages are now easing, however, car companies have shouldered the cost of scrapping production for millions of cars.

7 Tucson Outdoor Activities You Need to Try

As Tucson’s summer temperatures usually exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit, staying cool can be a challenge. Luckily for most Arizona cities, when the winter months begin, so do the outdoor activities. In these cooler months, the temperatures can range from 40-75 degrees Fahrenheit until it picks up in April. Residents can flock outdoors to explore Tucson’s natural beauty in these enjoyable conditions. From hiking the hidden canyon trail during the afternoon or skiing on Mount Lemmon, there are lots to do living in Tucson.

So maybe you’re thinking of becoming a ‘snowbird’ and looking at condos in Oro Valley, or you’re living in an apartment in downtown Tucson; read on to learn about Tucson’s outdoor activities that will make you fall in love with this city.

1. Gather with the local community and take a stroll downtown

With the weather cooling off from November through February, there are lots of Tucson outdoor activities. Grab some friends, enjoy the crisp air and wander through the charming Armory Park neighborhood or the historic area of Fourth Avenue. Alternatively you can take a stroll through the University of Arizona campus or walk a portion of the 12-mile Rillito River Park path.

“Every Monday, rain or shine, even during the heat and the holidays, you can always count on our community to gather together for a free walk/run in beautiful downtown Tucson,” says Catherine from SARSEF, a program that supports students wanting to think like scientists and engineers. “Meet Me at Maynard’s, now gathers at Hotel Congress at 5:30 pm every Monday to create activity and friendships and support downtown businesses.”

J.A. Jance, a local author, agrees. “My favorite wintertime activity would be walking in the crisp sunshine daily. I also enjoy attending the Tucson Rodeo, the Gem Show, and the Tucson Festival of Books.”

2. Experience the Winterhaven Festival of Lights on a party bike

The Winterhaven Festival of Lights brings people from all over together. You’ll be able to tour lights from hayrides, party bikes, and trolleys. It’s the perfect way to embrace the holiday spirit. Located in the Winterhaven neighborhood, you won’t be disappointed.

For those looking for a fun Tucson outdoor activity, Michelle from Arizona Party Bike recommends going to the festival on a party bike. “Winterhaven’s Festival of Lights is attended by hundreds of thousands of people from all over southern Arizona. Experiencing the excitement on a party bike is perfect for friends, families, and company holiday parties.”

3. Visit the unique Sonora Desert Museum

Museums are a great way to learn more about your city. This desert museum is a fusion experience combining zoos and aquarium exhibits with gardens, galleries, and a natural history museum.

“Visit the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, and don’t miss the Raptor show,” says Jacquelynn, a local photographer. “This place is not your typical stuffy, indoor museum; it’s more like a living legacy of the Sonoran Desert. There are outdoor and partially indoor live animal exhibits, and all of the animals and plants are native to the Sonoran desert. I suggest going at the end of the day, the warmest part of the day, to try to see the animals.”

4. Take advantage of the cool temperatures and try a silent disco

Embrace the cooler weather and gather your friends for a truly unique experience. Silent discos are fun to try if music and dancing are your thing. Rent your own headphones and have a party to remember, or find a disco downtown; it’ll sure be an unforgettable experience.

“If you’re looking for a unique way to spend an evening outdoors in Tucson during winter, look no further than a silent disco party,” says Party Headphones, a local silent disco rental company. “This event is always a blast, and it’s perfect for getting your blood pumping in the colder months. You’ll want to dress warmly for an outdoor silent disco party, as it can be chilly in the evening. However, the fun you’ll have dancing and socializing under the stars will make it all worth it. If you’re unsure where to find an outdoor silent disco event in Tucson, you could easily organize one yourself.”

5. Explore the vineyards and go wine tasting

If you’re looking for relaxation, wine tasting could be precisely what you’re looking for. Learn about local wineries and their process, and most importantly, sit back and enjoy a glass of wine. From tasting rooms downtown to vineyards about an hour south of Tucson in Sonoita, there are many excellent places to check out.

“Our favorite outside activity is visiting wine country for wine tasting,” says Karen from Arizona Winery Tours. “Many vineyards such as Autumns Sage and Rune have unique outdoor tasting areas where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery.”

6. Hike through the Saguaro National Park

During the cooler months, you can embark on a hiking adventure without worrying about the piercing rays of the sun. With all of Tucson’s national parks, there’s something for every explorer.

One of Tucson’s most popular areas for hiking is Saguaro National Park. A fun fact about the park is it was the very first national park created specifically to protect a plant species—the iconic saguaro cactus. “This national park is home to stunning saguaros, has several hiking trails and beautiful views,” says Kelly, a local blogger from Life in the Desert. “Get your daily dose of Vitamin D while exploring the park.”

7. Grab a bike and go for a ride

Tucson is a biker’s paradise. In fact, Tucson’s bike trails regularly land the city on lists of the best places to cycle in the United States.

If you love biking, Debbie from Tucson Bicycle Rental has you covered. She says, “With over 1,000 miles of bike lanes and 135+ miles of protected, paved multi-use paths, Tucson is the ultimate winter destination for cyclists. Whether you want to tackle Mt Lemmon, cruise through Saguaro National Park, grind up Madera Canyon, attack Kitt Peak, or meander around the Loop, you can’t beat Tucson for prime winter cycling.”

Firefly’s Alpha Rocket Reaches Orbit During Second Flight

Private space company Firefly finally reached orbit with its Alpha rocket, joining a short list of U.S. commercial rocket builders that have successfully launched a vehicle to orbit amidst a growing space industry.

Alpha lifted off on Saturday at 3:01 a.m. ET from Space Launch Complex 2 at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. About eight minutes after launch, the rocket’s upper stage reached orbit. The upper stage then deployed three payloads about an hour later following a circularization burn, according to Firefly. “With the success of this flight, Firefly has announced to the world there is a new orbital launch vehicle, available today, with a capacity that is pivotal to our commercial and government customers,” Bill Weber, Firefly CEO, said in a statement.

Firefly’s first attempt to fly its Alpha rocket ended in fiery flames. On September 2, 2021, one of Alpha’s four first-stage Reaver engines shut down unexpectedly about 15 seconds after liftoff, activating the flight termination system. The rocket exploded in a massive fireball above the Pacific Ocean.

This time around, things went relatively smoothly save for a slight delay in liftoff. Firefly initially attempted to launch Alpha on September 11, but engineers noted a drop in the supply of helium used to pressurize tanks in the rocket’s second stage. The following day, a second launch attempt was scrubbed due to unfavorable weather.

The 95-foot-tall (29-meter) expendable rocket is designed to provide low-cost rides for small satellites, carrying payloads up to 2,866 pounds (1,300 kilograms) for the price of $15 million per launch. By comparison, Rocket Lab’s Electron rocket can launch upwards of 660 pounds (33 kg) to orbit.

With Alpha reaching orbit, Firefly became the fifth commercial rocket manufacturer in the United States to do so. Other companies include SpaceX, Virgin Orbit, Astra, and Rocket Lab. There is definitely a growing need for these companies in the burgeoning space market, and many more private ventures like Firefly are now seeking to build their own rockets to reach orbit.

With its first successful launch, the company is now hoping to launch Alpha once per month. It’s a rather ambitious plan, and we’ll see if Firefly can deliver in the wake of its important breakthrough.

How to use your required minimum distributions for unpaid taxes

Portra | E+ | Getty Images

If you’re retired and haven’t made the necessary quarterly estimated tax payments for 2022, there may still be time to avoid late penalties, experts say.

Retirees must send tax payments four times per year if they don’t withhold enough from Social Security, pensions, investments or other sources of income.

However, for certain retirees, there’s a chance to correct missed payments through required minimum distributions, or RMDs, paid annually at age 72. (Your RMDs may have already started if you turned 70 and a half before Jan. 1, 2020.)

More from Personal Finance:
Here’s how advisors are helping clients slash their 2022 tax bill
Bipartisan bill aims to fix a costly Medicare enrollment mistake
Americans are suffering from ‘recession fatigue,’ report finds

With few chances for a do-over in the tax world, the withholding is a “good little wild card to go back and fix things,” said certified financial planner Marianela Collado, CEO of Tobias Financial Advisors in Plantation, Florida. She is also a certified public accountant.

For example, if you need to withdraw $75,000 from an individual retirement account by year-end to satisfy your RMD for 2022, you can estimate the year’s total federal and state tax liability and withhold the funds from your RMD. If you estimated you still owed $5,000 in taxes to meet quarterly estimated tax obligations, you could opt to withhold that amount, remit it to the IRS and receive the remaining $70,000 withdrawal.

“People don’t know this, but you could have a 100% withholding” by sending the entire RMD to the IRS, Collado said.

Managing your retirement account in a volatile market: Don't panic

You can complete this by Dec. 31, and it’s considered “pro rata” for each quarter, meaning it counts as on-time payments made by each deadline, explained JoAnn May, a CFP and CPA who founded Forest Asset Management in Berwyn, Illinois. “That’s a nice thing that I do for a lot of my older clients,” she said.

How to avoid penalties for quarterly estimated taxes

Typically, you can avoid federal penalties by paying, throughout the year, the lesser of 90% of your 2022 taxes or 100% of your 2021 bill if your adjusted gross income is $150,000 or less. You’ll need 110% of your 2022 bill if you make more than $150,000.

You can base payments on your income each quarter or check your 2021 return for last year’s tax liability and divide that number into four equal payments.

By paying at least these amounts by each of the deadlines, you won’t incur late payment penalties. The first three deadlines for quarterly estimated tax payments this year were April 18, June 15 and Sept. 15, and the fourth-quarter balance isn’t due until Jan. 17, 2023.

However, making payments based on last year’s liability isn’t a guarantee you won’t owe taxes for 2022. By working with a tax professional, it may be easier to gauge exactly how much to set aside before filing taxes in April.
