The Gambaros’ Red Hill home

Joyce Gambaro, widow of restaurateur Michael Gambaro, has sold the Red Hill home cherished by the couple – almost two years after the hospitality legend’s death.

The Gambaros’ massive five-bedroom, three-bathroom, four-car-garage home sold for $3.41m, according to Queensland Department of Resources records.

The home has been kept in pristine original condition since it was built three decades ago, a listing by Space Property said on realestate.com.au.

“This original cavity brick three storey residence has been held in the same family since it was built approximately 33 years ago.”

Michael Gambaro died in November 2020 from acute kidney injury and heart failure, after a lifetime hospitality career during which he turned his parents’ fish and chip shop on Caxton St into a sprawling restaurant and hotel empire.

The couple’s Red Hill home was said to have “three levels of undeniable quality and workmanship all in original condition”, though it remains to be seen if the new owners keep the site as is or ask for council approval to look at other options such as an apartment development or subdivision into two luxury home sites.

The property, which has 180-degree views from the city to Mt Coot-tha, was described as a prestige home or development site, with a 1492sq m block and two-street frontage.
